What to do in a dental emergency

Dental emergencies never occur at a convenient time. Whether you are getting ready to go to dinner, packing for a trip, or simply snacking during a normal day of work, the last thing you expect is a painful injury to a tooth. If you find yourself in the unfortunate event of a dental injury, there are a few things you can do to ease the pain and prepare for your treatment.

For a broken tooth or knocked out filling

If you have a broken tooth or have a filling that has come out, rinse any debris away with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the area if it is swollen and painful. If you can save any pieces of your tooth or filling, do so because there is a chance we can reapply it to your tooth, even if only temporarily. Next call us right away!

For a knocked out tooth

If you have a permanent tooth that has been knocked out, try to locate the tooth and avoid touching the root. Gently rinse the tooth but make sure not to scrub too hard. If you can, try to reinsert your tooth back into the tooth socket to keep the tooth alive. Hold the tooth in with a clean cloth or gauze. If you are unable to reinsert the tooth, place it in a cup of milk. The milk will help keep your tooth alive until you are able to come in. If you are able to come in within an hour we may be able to save your tooth, so call us immediately!

If you are bleeding profusely or severely injured, go to your nearest emergency room or dial 9-1-1 to get urgent care!

The main thing to remember is to stay calm. If you call us right away we’ll do everything we can to see you as soon as possible. If you find yourself needing emergency dental care, call us right away!
